XRP Market Cap Explained: What It Means and How It's Calculated
Market cap is one of the first numbers people look at when comparing cryptocurrencies, XRP included — but it's also one of the most commonly misunderstood.
The basic formula
Market cap = circulating supply × current price. For XRP, that means multiplying the number of XRP coins currently in circulation (not the full 100 billion created at genesis — see our guide on XRP's escrow for why those aren't the same number) by the live price shown on this site.
What it isn't
It isn't "money that's been invested." Market cap is a snapshot valuation based on the last traded price, applied to the entire supply. If XRP's price moves 10%, market cap moves 10% too — but that doesn't mean 10% of the supply's dollar value actually changed hands. Most of the supply never trades on any given day.
It isn't the same as trading volume. Volume measures how much was actually bought and sold in a period (usually 24 hours). A coin can have a large market cap and comparatively thin daily volume, which matters for how easily large amounts can be bought or sold without moving the price significantly.
It isn't fully "real" in a liquidity sense. If every holder tried to sell at once, the price would collapse long before the full market cap value could actually be realized — this is true of every asset's market cap, not an XRP-specific flaw, but it's worth understanding rather than treating the number as a literal dollar amount sitting somewhere.
Why circulating vs. total supply matters here
XRP's full 100 billion supply was created at the ledger's genesis. A large share has historically sat in Ripple's escrow, releasing on a scheduled basis rather than all being freely tradable. Market cap calculations should use circulating supply (what's actually liquid), not total supply — using total supply instead produces a larger, less meaningful "fully diluted" figure that overstates what's actually tradable today.
Comparing market cap across coins
Market cap is a reasonable way to compare the overall scale of different crypto assets, but it says nothing about which is a better holding, how decentralized ownership actually is, or how deep the real trading liquidity is at any given moment.
